Dust-Free Epoxy Floor Removal (Will The Job Be 100% Dust-Free?)

No, The Job Will Not Be 100% Dust-Free. BUT!

How Do We Achieve A Almost 90% Dust-Free Epoxy Floor Removal Experience For Our Clients Free Of Charge?

Concrete Grinding The Epoxy
We will remove all the epoxy flooring residue on your concrete slab with the use of a high powered Satellite 480 G3 Concrete Grinder that is connected directly into a high powered DustMaster DM-2680-M Dust Extractor.

When we are removing a flooring system such as epoxy substantial dust is produced from the epoxy flooring from grinding the epoxy off the slab. This dust is still massively reduced by the use of our high powered commercial dust extractors that are plugged directly into our equipment.

But unfortunately, small amounts of dust are still produced and cannot be completely eliminated even with the most expensive high-end equipment and the latest technology. It should also be noted that certain equipment such as concrete grinders NEED small amounts of dust to function correctly. (Although over 90% of the dust is still sucked up by a 3 engine dust extractor that is plugged directly into the concrete grinder) but around 10% of the dust still escapes.

This system is intentionally designed to let 10% of the dust escape as the concrete grinder needs dust under the diamonds (the blades that are grinding your slab) to grind the concrete without damaging your slab or our equipment.

If you are concerned about the small amounts of dust that may possibly get into areas that we are not working in such as the kitchens, bathrooms, cabinets, etc. we would advise that you seal off those areas that we are not working in with plastic and sticky tape before our team arrives to avoid delays.

Tile Removal Sydney (Transparent 2)DustMaster DM-2680-H Dust Extractor (Dust-Free) Concrete Grinding Sydney

Dustmaster® series dust extractors have been specially designed to handle demands of the concrete grinding industry which has high loading fine dust.

This is the H-Class (or often referred to as HEPA) Dust extractor that is certified to handle hazardous dust. These amazing dust collectors have been certified to capture up to 99.99% of the dust.

Dust extraction in our industry is often more important than the actual grinding itself. Without it, we could breathe the fine dust which could be detrimental to our health.

– Featuring dual 10A motors, maximum performance is ensured. The longopac bagging system makes handling and disposal of hazardous dust much easier.

– Performance is maintained by the rotary filter cleaning mechanism which automatically cleans the filter during operation.

– This machine has a single durable toggle switch for each motor.

– A deep clean is achieved while running whilst the motor is turned off. The rotary filter cleaning can be turned off when the DustMaster is not in use, using the rotary switch on the front panel.

H-Class (H13) dust extractors must pass the 0.3µm DOP test that certifies they capture no less than 99.99% of the dust.

– The rotary filter cleaning system is very effective and takes only 10-20 seconds to deep clean the filter. You may never have to remove the filter to clean it again, keeping your job and your hand’s cleaner!

– You won’t find a better piece of equipment to handle your job, this is the most high-end piece of equipment that we can use for your job. The next level up would require a 15A power supply which would require you to supply us a generator on-site as residential power only has 10A.

Epoxy Floor Coating Removal Sydney 2

Epoxy Floor Removal Process

All things wear out, your Epoxy Floor Coating will need attention and/or removal. Because Epoxy Floor Coatings are inherently durable they can be extremely difficult to remove, with mechanical means being the most favourable approach.

Acetone and heat can be used but this is usually reserved for coatings that are designed for domestic applications, tiny areas, and thin coatings. Anything hardier will require Concrete Grinding. Whilst Concrete Grinding is best practice, within that are further considerations: the final finish required & the hardness of the concrete, and the intended use of the space upon completion.

1) Preparation:
The first step is to remove any floor coverings or underlay as well as any old coatings, adhesives, and dust. The concrete should be cleaned prior to any installation of Epoxy to ensure the Epoxy bonds correctly.

2) Test Patch:
Prior to beginning any lengthy runs across the surface with our large Concrete Grinders, we use a small but powerful hand grinder to do a test patch somewhere less conspicuous. This will determine how resistant and strong the Epoxy or adhesive is, as well as how favourable or unfavourable the underlying concrete will be. Both of these variables will determine your choice of Concrete Grinding Diamond Discs, Plugs, or Shoes.

3) Raised Surfaces:
Your concrete surface must be brought back to the same height as the remainder of the floor. We cannot use a Concrete Grinder that has more surface area than the Epoxy it is removing or we risk gouging the surrounding area. We will approach raised surfaces by using high-powered machinery such as a Concrete Scarifier or Shot Blaster.

4) Diamond Discs, Plugs, or Shoes:
Diamond Disc, Plugs, or Shoes are an important selection, as important as any other factor in the process. Diamonds that are too light will become glazed, too heavy and they will leave scratch marks. We recommend using PCD Diamonds, followed up by 16-grit diamonds to leave a smooth finish ready for the re-installation of a new coating or flooring system.

5) The Removal:
Using a Concrete Grinder, walk the machine across the entire floor in a series of parallel runs. This process will need your full attention at all times. Too fast and you won’t remove enough material, too slow and you risk cutting too deeply. Too much overlap will leave an uneven surface, not enough and you will miss areas, meaning another pass. Thicker coatings will require more laps and stronger diamonds. PCDs must be used for thicker coatings. While #16 grits are fine for thin coatings.

6) Dust:
(P2) Dust Masks should always be used in combination with Commercial or Industrial (M CLASS) Dust Extractors. Silica is the silent killer for many people in the construction industry. It’s important to protect your health from the dangerous Silica Dust.

7) Who Should Remove Epoxy?
It’s often best to leave Epoxy Coating Removal to the professionals we can provide a Dust-Free specialist team that will remove your Epoxy Coating safely and quickly for an affordable price without the hassle and frustration of you attempting to do the process yourself.

Removing Epoxy Floor Coatings Sydney - 3

In some locations, sections of the epoxy wear away while other parts stay fast, giving an uneven look to the overall finish of the room. If you run a customer-facing business, where a lot of people come walking through, epoxy floor finishes can look worn within a short time frame.

If you think you’re ready to get a new floor in place, the first step is getting that old epoxy off and disposed of in the right way.

Removing Epoxy Paint From Concrete can be easy with the right tools and skills. If you’re tired of looking at epoxy in your home or business and are ready to get rid of it and make a change, Dust-Free Concrete Grinding Sydney can help.

What Are The Different Methods For Removing Epoxy Coatings?

1) Mechanically, using a concrete grinder, hand grinder, concrete scarifier, shot blaster, or floor sanding.

2) Chemically, using an epoxy paint thinner, acetone, Isopropyl alcohol, Denatured alcohol

3) OTHER, using a heat gun, putty knife, scraper, or chisel

Epoxy Floors are designed for extreme durability, and they’re just as valued as industrial and manufacturing floors as they are a suburban home’s garage floor. But it’s that same durability that makes Removing Epoxy Paint such a challenge.

There are two main ways to strip the Epoxy Floor Coating off your concrete floors: Mechanically, using a floor grinder; or. Chemically, using an epoxy paint thinner. If the Epoxy Floor Coating is in extremely poor condition and is a small area (such as 5 square metres), this is a job you could potentially tackle yourself using a heat gun, putty knife, scraper, or chisel.

Mechanically:
Removing epoxy through mechanical grinding, scarifier, or shot blasting
Concrete Grinding is our preferred method for removing old, hardened Epoxy Coatings from concrete floors. It’s highly effective, affords us the control we need, and we have the experience and equipment to do it quickly and safely.

Chemically:
Removing epoxy Chemically, using different types of chemicals –
Epoxy is lauded for its chemical resistance, which is why you’ll find Epoxy Flooring at industrial laundries and family-owned restaurants alike. However, though Epoxy can’t be excessively damaged by solvents, it can be temporarily softened by them.

To Remove Epoxy from concrete using a solvent,  you must soak a small area with the chemical until the epoxy has sufficiently softened and then scrap away at it with either a mechanical grinder or by hand. Professionals will use heavy-duty solvents, which you may be able to purchase from your local hardware store, but common Epoxy-Removal solvents also include:

1) Isopropyl alcohol
2) Denatured alcohol
3) Acetone

The listed solvents are highly flammable, and all solvents emit toxic fumes that can injure people and damage the surrounding area. Solvents are usually the best way for Removing Epoxy from small areas — grouting, for instance. Though we may occasionally use solvents to soften Epoxy, Concrete Grinding is always our preferred method though.

Acetone can be effective on wood or concrete surfaces. It should loosen the Epoxy, so you can peel it away easily. Use acetone only in well-ventilated areas and keep it away from any flammable objects

OTHER:
Using a heat gun, putty knife, scraper, or chisel
Heating the Epoxy beyond its TG (softening point) and/or cure temperature, can soften the Epoxy. You can try this by using a heat gun or a soldering iron on the Epoxy bond line, heating only small sections of the bond line at a time so it stays warm enough to soften. After you have heated the small area of epoxy, use a sharp object to try to scrape away the Epoxy Coating. Scrapers, Chisels, and Putty Knifes are often used to try to scrape it away.

When Removing Epoxy Coatings we offer the most appropriate services to get your job done in a quick and safe manner. These are the methods that we use below:
1) Heat Gun and Scraper (Tiny Jobs – DIY)
2) Concrete Hand Grinder (Small Jobs)
3) Walk Behind Concrete Grinder (Small – Large jobs)
4) Concrete Scarifier (Large Jobs – Thick Coatings)
5) Concrete Shot Blaster (Large Jobs – Thick Coatings)

Is There Magnesite Flooring In Your Property?

If your home was built in the 1920s 1980s, it is likely that your home (Especially unit blocks in NSW) could potentially have Magnesite Flooring. Magnesite is present below a flooring system such as carpet. Magnesite is a product used as a noise preventative and a Floor Levelling agent.

Magnesite Flooring absorbs moisture (particularly in areas prone to moisture such as external walls, doorways, around shower recesses, near windows, laundries, etc.) Unfortunately, once Magnesite Flooring absorbs moisture it starts a chemical reaction that will cause Concrete Cancer over long periods of time.

Because your Magnesite Flooring was laid 40 – 100 years ago, it is likely that it has absorbed moisture over the many decades that it has been trapped under your flooring system and it has most likely started to break down and lose its strength making it an unsuitable Floor Levelling product that it once was, as well as very hollow, which destroys its soundproofing.

The best thing you can do to prevent further damage to your property and the concrete slab is to remove it ASAP. Magnesite Flooring consists of Magnesium Oxychloride, which may contain asbestos.

Since it is a health hazard and a major safety risk in NSW, if you remove your flooring system and find out there is Magnesite under it.

YOU MUST remove your Magnesite Flooring for the safety of you and everyone else in your unit block.

Strata may pay to remove your Magnesite Flooring as it is considered “Common property”. Magnesite Flooring can cause Concrete Cancer which is a major risk to everyone’s safety as well as the successful reinstallation of your new flooring system.

NO company will give you any form of warranty or insurance on any flooring installation job on a magnesite floor, which is another reason why it should always be removed.
